Our Program
Thank you for choosing Edge Yoga School for your Yoga for Children programming. This program will introduce different ways to safely and effectively teach children to reduce stress, strengthen the body, and express their emotions. Movement can be fun, and we aim to show you how.
We will cover each of the learning categories below in our sangha labs. Students will be required to submit a workshop recording and worksheet for each of the topics below for their chosen age group.
General Background in the Specialty Area – 12 Hours
Students will participate in interactive labs on how each of the eight limbs of yoga differ between the adult and child, with respective age groups.
Techniques, Training and Practice – 20 Hours
Students will attend labs in person or online to discuss the required reading Play: how it shapes the brain, opens the imagination, and invigorates the soul. This information will be applied in the creation of class plan design. Students may choose to provide a recording of their findings.
Teaching Methodology – 15 Hours
Students will practice sequences with the aid of the Yoga Snippets guide. Class plans will be tailored to the appropriate age group, and a theme will be added to each. Meditation activities will include yoga stories, art activities, and games that will be trauma-informed. Students will need to submit their class plans, and schedule to teach in person, online, or provide a recording of their class.
Anatomy and Physiology – 10 Hours
Students will attend webinars to learn the accompanying text Developmental anatomy and physiology of children: a practical approach. These webinars will be held as a book club, and visited on each lab.
Yoga Philosophy, Lifestyle and Ethics for Yoga Teachers – 12 Hours
We will host an interactive discussion on what yoga can be and how the tools of yoga can help with self-regulation. This will be covered in the Whole-Brain Child Workbook during labs, either in person or online. Students may also choose to provide a recording of their teaching, if they prefer.
Practicum – 18 Hours
Students will schedule times to teach or shadow classes in person or online with Michelle Rae Sobi. Students may choose which age group(s) they would like to focus on, but must shadow at least one class of each age group.
Shadow a Class 8 hours
Teach a Class 10 hours
Practicum Elective - 8 Hours
Teach One Another
Students will spend 8 hours in lab practice teaching one another. They may choose in person or online without the Lead Teacher being present.
Students may petition for graduation upon completion of their hours and demonstrating mastery through the course activities.
We have designed this course modeled after the Yoga Alliance credentialing process to aid Edge Alum in offering YACEP Continuing Education workshops beyond graduation. Take the time during this training to document how you might like to present this information, as it may serve you in the future. Yoga Workshops accompany class nicely in two hour formats, no matter if you're teaching in a studio or on a yoga retreat!
